Concerns and Objectives of

GAKUPLUMIG

as a Faction in the Works Council and Senate

GAKUPLUMIG is an electoral alliance. GAKU stands for Union Working Group Critical University, PLUM refers to the Platform for University Co-Determination, and IG denotes the Interest Group of Lecturers and Knowledge Workers.

Our alliance sees itself as an emancipatory and critical representative body for the interests of all members of the academic staff at the University of Vienna. We advocate for a democratic and contemporary structure of the university and its staffing, regardless of electoral group or category affiliation.

We do not consider permanent employment (tenure) to be an exception. It must become the standard after several years of successful work in research, teaching, and academia.

Our concern is that the work of those employed at the University of Vienna—in research, teaching, and administration—is recognized and valued. Such appreciation requires a staffing policy that creates opportunities and enables predictable career perspectives within the university.

The people at this university should be involved in its development and thereby also shape their own futures. Such a process requires transparent and comprehensible decision-making structures, effective opportunities for participation, the dismantling of hierarchical group divisions, and an allocation of resources that reflects actual tasks and contributions.

Currently, more than two-thirds of the academic staff at the University of Vienna work under precarious conditions (fixed-term contracts, involuntary part-time positions). We are committed to ending this unacceptable situation, as it negatively affects both the health of those impacted and the quality of research and teaching.
